Achieving Comfort In Organic Design

Internationally prominent architect Frank Gehry scribbled his ideas for the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain and the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, both structures becoming icons of creativity for the world to emulate. So when Link Huang (Think Tank Team) presented to us only sketches of an organic design of an outdoor bench for SAMSUNG Electronics, we felt the need of putting on our “Swami” headgear and delve into the mind of the designer and his intents. And much like the architectural and engineering team of Gehry, we dove into formulating the details of this organic and almost “live” bench.

Composed of 250 pieces and assembled together by metal tube structure, this bench gives you a feeling of life and movement with its organic appearance, and as in music, segues from one material and finish into another.
Fabrication of this amazing fixture is not without challenges and setbacks. With a great number of individual pieces that have undergone processes of precise cutting, fitting, and finishing, visualizing a finished product before assembly was an improbable task. Niconat Mfg. Co.had to consider the anticipated look and visual effect that the designer had imparted to us. Words do not readily equate to the actual concept and desired appearance. But these did not dampen the spirits of our design and engineering team and they came up with a finished product replicating a not only vague and wanting sketch of a prolifically minded designer and artist, but also his concept of a living piece of industrial creation.

We have thus grown in appreciation of organic design and fabrication. Looking at the finished Samsung bench, we could not help but think of a chameleon that changes and transitions from one color, texture and material into another. But with this creation, there are no pretensions.
